No. 3: Joanna Zastrozna

Joanna Zastrozna - "No. 3", exhibition in Mala Gallery, Warsaw, Poland, November 2001.

Thanks to recent technogical acceleration the world of image recording underwent significant changes.

Computers and other advanced tools of electronic registration while enhancing technical specifications introduced some chaos and discretion at the same time. It relates also to photography which thanks to wide availibility and easiness of image processing became particularly open to every possible manipulations and distortions, that are not always steering in the right direction.

It seems to be quite essential that even among the artists of younger generation to whom Joanna Zastrozna certainly belongs, there is a tendency to try to achieve some order and to systematize this visual turmoil. Already her first work of this series entitled "Messenger" which was presented for the first time in the Mała Gallery two years ago there was introduced some order and was present aiming at designation of the elements knowingly building dramaturgy of the picture. Then the leading role in this quest played colour. This time situation is similiar. Joanna Zastrozna in her next series "NR 3" is trasnsferring to her photographic work signification and understanding of colour that is typical to graphic arts and uses it with painter's freedom, as wrote Witold Wegrzyn.

Joanna Zastrozna builds and distorts her photographs in a way that allows to maintain balanced composition and uniform style. She consistently employs homogenous style based mainly on colour and a theme of gesture of human body. Thanks to this consistency she is able to create a world of specific dream like poetry which at the same time is the world of her own, built with elements taken from surrounding reality.
