Teresa Gierzyńska: "Four pictures"

Teresa Gierzyńska, from series "Four pictures"; exhibition at Mala Gallery, September 2004 r.

TERESA GIERZYŃSKA has made an attempt to convey atmosphere through colour using for this colour photographs not manipulated by any electronic means. Her pictures are a kind of very personal report on states of her consciousness made by registering her close neighbourhood. These pictures, on a verge of readibility and taken in everyday surroundings, were grouped into four sets in which colour plays a role of a binding element.

The artist has decided deliberately not to employ documentary qualities of photography. By changing focal length of her lens to avoid precise representation of different details she juxtaposed the pictures following her own concept, not necessarily observing a chronological order. This way she has created four compositions. They have quality of an impression each of which has a one dominating colour hue. They contain rather specific atmospherethan a precise description of what we see around us.

Four pictures
How to construct a picture that will communicate all the magic of spring: augury of something that will inevitably come - space, innocence?
And what about the quintessence of the rich, ripe autumn?
How to present euphoria and freshness contained in the summer.
And, finally, or perhaps first of all: how to present the depressive winter: its moody and full of harmony aura in a way acceptable to us, allowing us to appreciate its qualities, making us to stop complaining and allowing us to rest - before summer euphoria?
How to present it another way?
