Dag Alveng "Summer Light" - Mala Gallery, Warsaw, May 2000
AG ALVENG has been working on his summer pictures since the late 1970s. Numerous pictures from the series have been exhibited under the title Frames. Hvasser at the Preus Museum of Photograhy in 1982. The project was not, however, presented as an independent exhibition until 1988, at the Museum of Photographic Art in Odense (Denmark) and later in some other museums and galleries.
In the series, Alveng photographs the ordinary, everyday life which we enjoy but never really notice. He is inspired mostly by a garden surroundnig a country-house in Norway.
Summer Light - this title in English seems to better re-create the aura which Norwegian photographer Dan Alveng has been trying since many years to capture on his photographs. Summers in the Nordic countries are brief nevertheless they are used up very intensively. But this feeling of summer euphoria is not apparent on all the pictures - the landscapes of Dan Alveng are reports of poetic atmosphere, these pictures, flooded with sunlight emanate the mood of mystery. They are like the story lacking the end, it seems like this photographed garden just moment ago was full of loud and h appy voices.
But these pictures were taken moment later. We only can assume that these places were full of people. The photographer "grabs" vibrating hot air - he tries to stop the moving shoots of bushes and stalks of flowers. It has to be continous operation, repated since dozen or so years - but will he be able to hold this sumer light for shure?
Perhaps this few photographs will be attempt to answer this question.
