"Taming II": Wiktor Nowotka

Wiktor Nowotka, from series "Taming II". Exhibition in Mala Gallery, Warsaw, October - November 2000.

When photographing
I am taming a space
and everything it contains:
people, things, animals big and small, plants.
I am taming my universe.
I am taming it and familiarizing with it.
I am feeling like becoming a part of it
and it becoming a part of myself.

A DOZEN or so of small photographs. All of them made without use of photographic camera, by a means of simple, closed boxes or cans in which light sensitive film was exposed by light oozing through a tiny hole. One of the artists who realise their photographic visions this way has called it "a can-vision". And really so, the pictures obtained in such a simple way are vision-like, the picture is subjected to characteristic distortions which give it impression of immediate tangibility.

Photographs made by Wiktor Nowotka show his closest everyday environment: the backyard of the house he lives in, fragments of the garden surrounding his house, a veranda, a pavement, a slightly open entrance door and a corridor vanishing in perspective. There are also windows sills of his photographic studio with somewhat archaic cameras playing rather role of decorative objects than usable equipment. Everything is photographed in a way evoking direct closeness. We feel like being surrounded, almost absorbed by a space that came nearer to us and seems to be stretched out. These objects and environment in spite of being fogged and blurred are becoming "tamed". We do see them more intensively and feel their presence stronger. The photographs of Wiktor Nowotka that present so close fragment in so unexpected way multiply our perception of this what we are not able to see and perceive in our fast, everyday life in order to "tame" it.
