Dominika Truszczynska: "SELF-DISAPPEARANCE"
Dominika Truszczyńska, from series Self-disappearance, exhibition at Mala Gallery, November 2004 r. |
EXHIBITION of Dominika Truszczyńska is a kind of reflections upon time. Photography being an element confirming the passing of time posseses also, according to the artist, qualities enabling to reveal the nature of time. This nature is of paradoxical character - the longer lasts taking the photograph the more invisible becomes recorded subject. The artist analyses phases of the action of light in relation to her own body. We can assume that for her taking photographs is a kind of an intellectual game in which the mere process of recording means being shine herself through not only in physical but also in symbollic sense. The light causes mutual penetration, sometimes even disappearance of the photographed person.

PHOTOGRAPHY can be described simply as action of light during a period of time. Light and time. Conventionally we are used to think that the longer something exists the more of it there is. Even there are only memories. It is not so with the time itself. The more of it we have spent the less of it we have. It is an universal, though nonmaterial, experience. Photography is able to capture and to reveal it. During the first phase of the action of light we can record the image and have an impression that we stayed with something concrete that was left from this passing time. An image. A souvenir. A moment. Already dead but tangible. But the longer lasts the action of light in Photography the less is being left. The less of the world. There is a natural transition from recording phase to nonexistence. I am oozing through walls, the light permeates across myself. I am becoming transparent. I am disappearing. By taking photographs of myself - I am disappearing. I am self-disappearing. It is very nice.
